Lady Pheres is like the black pearl of Steve Morell´s upcoming album „The Life And Death Of
Jimmy Pheres And His Rise From The Underworld“. It is as seducing as a melody played by a music box over and over again, possibly somewhere deep beneath the surface of the earth. The dialogue between “The Boy In The Black Chelsea Boots” and Lady Pheres (Steve Morell & Monika Pokorna) - is captivating and fascinating. Together they dive into a vacuum of confessions and emotions. The romance of the two reflects itself in every line. Piano sounds, metal & glass percussions, violins, cellos, guitars, vibraphones, bass and chimes are purposefully used to create a dreamy atmosphere. This instrumentally incisive melody repeats itself hypnotically throughout this masterpiece.

Mixing and mastering of the tune was done by Ragnar, a long time friend and musical companion of Morell. This cooperation resulted into a unique, orchestral and sometimes even monumental sound. Morell & Pokorna were also accompanied by artists such as EF Kriete (Goldfish), Andrew Unruh (Einstürzende Neubauten), Carolin Werren, Kevin Mooney (Adam & The Ants), Karen Weber and Valerie Renay (Noblesse Oblige). With a hint of pop and its avant-garde elements the song has the potential to turn into one of the most romantic singles in decades.

“Lady Pheres” is, after “Loneliness”, the second single release of Morell’s upcoming conceptual album, “The Life And Death Of Jimmy Pheres And His Rise From The Underworld“. “It’s Been So Long”, which will be published on “Lady Pheres” and can also be found on the album. The bonus track “Holding On” will only be available in 12”. For the digital release the original “Lady Pheres” was remixed by “The Handclap Situation”, “Electrosexual” and “DJ Vela” (Dangerous Drums).

The Video is the second video of "Lady Pheres" it is about love, hurt and desire between a man and a woman. The characters are Steve Morell and Monica Pokorna. The Video is directed and photographed by Michaela Kühn and edited by Anika Mey. A short cut of this video was licensed to Paula Immich as a preview for her Spring/Summer 2011 collection and has been titled as "The Damaged". Check out Paula Immich at http://www.paulaimmich.de. The song was as well licensed on the famous compilation "Ich Bin Ein Berliner". This is the full version of the video which has not been shown before to a public audience

(...) Steve Morell strikes back with a 2nd EP announcing the full length “The Life And Death Of Jimmy Pheres And His Rise From The Underworld”. The duo Steve Morell - Monica Pokorna got a helping hand from several contributors. The song “Lady Pheres” was already released on a compilation released in 2010. The “Original” mix opens this EP revealing a rather cabaret influenced love-song. The main accent of the song has been put on the vocals of the duo Morell – Pokorna. The moody piano parts accompany both lovers in a sensual trip. The EP is featuring different remixes (...) The “DJ Vela’s The Lady Smiles Vocal Remix” is featured on the regular (vinyl) edition and is again accentuating the kind of symbiosis between both protagonists. Among the 3 other remixes I especially want to mention the “DJ Vela The Lady Smiles Instrumental Remix”. It doesn’t really bring anything new, but after a few remixes the tune sounds recognizable and carrying. Among the other tracks, Morell and Pokorna again merge together in sensuality. I like the somewhat harder “Confusion”. It remains a kind of ballad driven by guitar riffs and a melodic lead on top. “Holding On” which is only featured as bonus track on the vinyl edition starts rather weird, but evolves in a progressive and exciting way. This song is featuring different influences, but in the end it all sounds pretty cohesive. I think it’s now time for the full length of Steve Morell which has already been in the pipeline for a while. Both EP’s are meant as appetizers and are rather convincing although I have a preference for “Lady Pheres”.

Further magnitude is added with a spot on choice of remixes. The Handclap Situation..., and Electrosexual (here untypically downtempo) add the icing. Nick and Kylie never sounded so good. Personal favourite: Dj Vela Mix.

(…) Steve Morell, has a new single out and it has worked its spell on me. Released as Steve Morell & Monika Pokorna there are four tracks: ‘Lady Pheres’, ‘It’s Been So Long’, ‘Confusion’ and ‘Holding On’. There are also a bunch of electronic remixes of ‘Lady Pheres’ completing an epic package. One gets a distinct Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin vibe of duetting lovers having had far too many cigarettes and late nights. These touching raw ballads with their lush orchestration and a later years Johnny Cash vibe are now whetting my appetite to hear the forthcoming album ‘The Life and Death of Jimmy Pheres and his Rise from the Underworld’. This will have collaborations with various members of Einstürzende Neubauten, Noblesse Oblige, Adam & The Ants, Warren Suicide and more. If David Lynch makes another film this could well be a contender for the soundtrack. Lovers of smoky songs of angst, heartache and turmoil will adore this.

This romantic duet between “Steve Morell”, Berlin´s jack of all trade and mastermind behind the label Pale Music Int., and his none the less charming girlfriend, “Monika Pokorna” is the most movingly ballad since “Stella Maris” from “Blixa Bargeld & Meret Becker”. The whole track sounds like a well-executed continuation of Nick Cave’s album “The Good Son”. Romance has finally returned, and that is a good thing, because if romance dies so will “Lady Pheres” – but only a few know what real love is – just like those two lovers do!

(...) To get acquainted with its atmosphere, Steve Morell and his partner Monica Pokorna, bring to their audience four new tracks of which the title track is "Lady Pheres". The main track is a strong ballad characterised by the alternation of Steve Morell and Monica Pokorna who start to tell the story of Jimmy, the character of the album and his love relation with Lady Pheres, the one that will ease him from his pain On this one acoustic guitars, strings, xylophone and drums initially plays softly, like they don't want to disturb that magic feeling but then, in a crescendo, they underline the atmosphere. The second new track is "It's Been So Long" and it will be included on the album. This one is a bit more melancholic and with slow rhythm. I don't know if this one tells of the death of Lady Pheres (…) "Confusion" is a short intermezzo made of metallic percussions, vocals and brushed acoustic strings. "Holding On" is a song which is exclusive to the 12" and it's a good ballad with paced rhythms and post punk atmospheres (the distorted guitar inserts and the tribal rhythms make a nice effect). These are the original tunes and I liked them and they make me think that the album will be a good one. Now, we can talk about the remixes. On the vinyl we have one remix "Lady Pheres (DJ Vela's The Lady Smiles Vocal Remix)". Of the original tune it keeps the strings parts, some guitars, some vocals and the xylophone. It adds a bouncing retro drum machine sound and nice effects on vocals. It isn't a proper dance version but it sounds nice. On the digital version of the release, we have three other remixes of the track. "The Handclap Situation... Remix" is a minimal ambient one with strings, choruses which turns into a dub/drum and bass one after a while. The "Electrosexual Remix" is a sensual electro mid tempo where the main melodic parts (instruments and vocals) are used and alternated with the add of 4/4 hard beats. This is a good EP which sees Ragnar, EF Kriete (Goldfish), Andrew Unruh (Einsturzende Neubauten), Carolin Werren, Kevin Mooney (Adam & The Ants), Karen Weber and Valerie Renay (Noblesse Oblige) collaborating with the couple.
